Pre-SULAM
- The community partner site for this project is the residents of Allamanda College. As a former residence of Allamanda College for about two year, I have seen termite infestation as major problem that faced by Allamanda College residents. I anticipated that the service learning will be hassle free and run smoothly. This is due this service learning gave benefit for both party. I also expected that the residents and staff in Allamanda College will assist us in this service learning project.
- The agency involved in this service learning is Allamanda College staff. My personal perception toward agency is that they will provide cooperation because termite infestation also affect the resident. The staff in Allamanda also seek for solution to this problem. From our teams, we also can identify the causes of the problem and assist the agency and community to overcome termite infestation problem.
- I select termite infestation problem because when I became Allamanda College resident, I witnessed my friends room and properties destroyed by termite. This problem seem not to end after a long time. Even though my room and properties not affected by termite infestation I think it is very important to solve this problem to avoid thing repeated.
- The only fear working with the community is I cannot reach the expectation of Allamanda College staff. Since the service learning projected online, I fear that our team cannot provide effective solution to overcome termite infestation problem in Allamanda College.
During-SULAM
- The experience gained during service learning problem help me to understand role and responsibilities as citizen. The experience teach me that it is important to aware about surrounding and how animal plays roles as pest in urban environment especially. This also teach me to spread awareness to the community how to overcome pest problem efficiently.
- Skill and knowledge that I gain from this service learning activities mostly involve technical and media skill. Since the service learning project conducted online, I learned to utilize many software to convey the message toward community. For instance, I learn to make poster and info graphic and termite. Next, I also gained skill to communicate and work as team even via online platforms.
- The experience gained from this service learning project assist me to understand animal pest management especially about insect pest management. From this experience, I learned that is important to identify the source of problem caused by pest such as termites. Next, I also learn that there are various method to encounter pests rather than using industrial chemical. Lastly, I also learn importance to know what pest that I handling to provide effective solution to overcome problem caused by pests such as termite infestation.
- The character traits I developed from this service learning project are flexibility in communication and responsibility. In this service learning project, I have learned to accomplish the team goal even via online platforms. Due to the pandemic outbreak, I have learnt to establish myself to communicate and proceed work progress with my team via online platforms. Even though I am technologically challenged in this project, I managed to complete my tasks for team. Next, I also learnt to give commitment and prioritize the tasks for the project on time.
- I will use the knowledge from this service learning problem to protect my wooden appliances in my home from termites infestation. Next, I will able to remove favourable condition for termites in my house. Lastly I will able to manage pest problem that occur in my house.
- This service learning project related to my long term to spread awareness about how to handle and manage pest problem in community. Awareness and knowledge of community are the key for this long term goal. Next, the service learning project aid me in my long team goal by improving my communication and technical skill. This skills are useful in my later career and worklife.
Post-SULAM
- From this service learning project, the community approached are helpful and friendly. They gave cooperation with us by giving important information via survey we conducted. Some of them aware about the termite infestation issue and some of them not aware about this issue. Hopefully, this service learning project can deliver information and spread the awareness to the residents regarding this issue.
- The strength of this service learning project is our team use social media such as instagram to deliver information to the targeted community. Most of people nowadays use social media in daily life, so the delivery of information seem to be faster and effective via social media. Next, our project also comprehensive. The project cover short and long terms solution of problem chosen. In contrast, our project also has weakness, our teams cannot conduct interview and field visit due to Movement Control Order (MCO).
- Problems and challenge faced by our teams is internet connection issues. Some of us unable to attend online meeting. However everybody in our team give commitment to complete the tasks given by group leader. Next, the challenge we faced during this service learning project is some of resident do not give appropriate feedback in our survey.
- Our service learning project turn out the same way we anticipated, everybody in our team play their own roles to accomplish our service learning objectives and goals. Even, we have hardship to plan proper plan for this project, everybody gave their opinion and cooperation in decision making. In contrast, we are still lacking of the number of respondent for our survey due to unable to hold interview of Allamanda. However from the feedback and number of respondents answers from surveys still indicate that our objective for this project is achieved.
- The impact of our service learning project to community is they gained the essential information regarding termites infestation. Next, they able to find the source of termite infestation and apply they knowledge to choose suitable solution depending on how bad the problem is. Furthermore, they can prevent this issues by avoid to provide favourable condition for termites to build up colony. This can be k proved from the feedback given by the targeted community via evaluation form from our team.
- The most important lesson we learn that teamwork and communication are the most vital thing to accomplish any tasks. If we lack teamwork and communication, we even cannot accomplish small task as a teams. All of team member gave maximum effort in this service learning project. Every team member has do reading and personal research on the causes and solution toward termite infestation termite. With this our team can convert the knowledge to the medium that understandable for community. This also provide long time solution to termite infestation when the resident know how to prevent the termite infestation. It is also can reduce the expenses of renovation for Allamanda College management and staff.
- The most important skills in conducting service-learning communication skill especially with team and community. It is important to communicate well with our team to avoid miscommunication in work progress. Miscommunication will delay the works progress and some of goals cannot achieved. Next, the communication skills with community is vital to hook and gain their attention toward the issues we try to convey. If we can attract people to listen the issues, they will lose interest and the delivery of information will stop,Hence the objective cannot accomplished. Moreover, creativity is also important to hook the attention of community especially when it comes of using info graphic to convey the information. If the info graphic not appealing, it is difficult to deliver the messages. Lastly, time management is vital skill in service learning project because there are component or tasks need to be complete before approaching the community.
- If our group were given the same tasks for the second time, I will conduct it with same concept but with a few improvement. The usage of social media as platform to spreading information will be remain. The improvements that can be done in future is invite expert to give talk about the problem chosen. Next, fun activities such as quiz and trivia should be done to attract the community. Lastly, our team will conduct direct interview with targeted community and make some field visit to oversee the problem chosen.
